Outdoor Sports & Activities

For those who love the outdoors, the region is a natural playground, where unspoilt landscapes, varied terrain and a wide range of outdoor activities cater to every level of experience.

HIKING

Hikers are spoilt for choice, with countless routes starting either directly from Penedo do Bufo or elsewhere in the region, thanks to an extensive network of way-marked trails. The Via Algarviana (GR13), the Algarve’s iconic long-distance walking route, stretches for almost 300 km across the region’s mountain landscapes, from Alcoutim, on the banks of the Guadiana River at the Spanish border, to Cabo de São Vicente, the dramatic south-western tip of mainland Portugal overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The trail is divided into 14 stages, making it easy to plan walks of any length or combine several sections into a longer adventure.

You can also explore the Algarve section of the Rota Vicentina – Historical Way (GR11), an iconic 230 km long-distance trail linking Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente via Odeceixe. Part of the route follows the spectacular Trilho dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Trail), widely regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful coastal walks, with breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean.

The GR15 (Rota Guadiana) follows Portugal’s eastern border with Spain from north to south, offering a unique journey through the country’s unspoilt interior and the distinctive landscapes of the Guadiana frontier.

Around fifteen way-marked walking trails can be found across the municipality of Loulé. Some begin within walking distance of Penedo do Bufo, while others are easily reached by car, bus, taxi or bicycle.

We will also share some of our favourite walks starting directly from the house. Although not all of them are officially way-marked, each route can be downloaded to your smartphone, allowing you to explore the surrounding countryside independently and at your own pace.

CYCLING

Road bikes, mountain bikes and hybrid bikes can all be hired and delivered directly to Penedo do Bufo, or to any location where you wish to begin your ride. This gives you complete freedom to explore the authentic landscapes of the Barrocal, the Serra, or the Algarve coastline at your own pace.

Like its hiking counterpart, the Via Algarviana is also signposted for mountain biking, with a route divided into five stages ranging from 40 to 75 km, running from west to east cross the Algarve.

GOLF

Golf enthusiasts will also be spoilt for choice, with a wide selection of renowned courses nearby, including Tôr, Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Albufeira. Set in spectacular natural surroundings, they offer exceptional golfing experiences for players of all levels.
